The Holidays are coming! The Holidays are coming! As we approach my favorite time of year, I am starting to get busy making plans. Special meals, parties, decorating, cards, presents, lights, music…..you get the idea. While it is a busy time, for me it is a joyous time. I love the sights, sounds and smells…everything about it. Some of the things I love best about this time of the year are the traditions that I get to share with my family.
Thanksgiving is spent making and eating traditional foods with family and friends. When we sit down for dinner, each person at the table shares the one thing they are most thankful for that year. It is a small thing, but in the weeks leading up to it, it causes me to think about all of the good things in my life that I am grateful for.
The weekend after Thanksgiving is spent decorating the house for Christmas and putting up the tree (yes, its fake. 🙂 ). We have carols playing and we always share a box of chocolate-covered cherries. That is a tradition that came from my husband’s family and now we continue it with our son.
In December there is the night we drive around and look at Christmas lights, the family party with games, watching our favorite Christmas movies, and baking goodies for friends and family. Christmas Eve always includes Dad’s reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Traditions help bond our family and give us all something special to look forward to each year.
One of the things I am most thankful for is that I get to spend all of my holidays here in beautiful Big Bear. When I was a kid and our home here was only our weekend cabin, we would come up to spend our holidays. There is just something magical about the mountains this time of year. Watching it snow out the window while the fire roars in the fireplace, the smells of food and goodies baking in the oven, family gathered playing games….awesome.
