Lincoln2Tomorrow would be Abraham Lincoln’s 204th Birthday. When I was in elementary school here in Big Bear, the father of one of my peers used to come to the school on that day and give a presentation. He dressed up like President Lincoln (he actually looked very much like him) and gave us a history of his life and Presidency. We then got to ask questions and he would answer them. It was a fun tradition that I am glad I got to experience.

Why did he do this? I believe it was because he had great respect for the man and wanted to share that with young minds. He felt that by learning of Lincoln’s history, we might remember what he stood for and embrace it. Abraham Lincoln has always been one of my favorite Presidents since that time.

President Lincoln is known for many great things, one of them being his quotes. Following are a few of my favorites:

“Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

“Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.”

“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”

“Whatever you are, be a good one.”

Happy Birthday, Mr. Lincoln. You still inspire me to be a better person every day.

punxsutawney-philAn early spring is on the way, according to groundhog “Punxsutawney Phil.”

When the Pennsylvania groundhog emerged from his dwelling at Gobbler’s Knob this morning, he did not see his shadow.”And so ye faithful, there is no shadow to see, an early Spring for you and me,” proclaimed Bob Roberts, one of Phil’s handlers.

According to folklore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and see its shadow, then six more weeks of winter weather is on the way but if it comes out and sees no shadow, spring is expected to come early.

Punxsutawney, the Pennsylvania town that is home to one of the most famous weather-predicting groundhogs, Punxsutawney Phil, has been carrying on the tradition of Groundhog Day since the 1800s, according to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. Ever since the tradition began in 1887, Phil (and his ancestors) saw their shadows 99 times, while predicting an early spring only 16 times. There was no record for nine of the years.

Despite the prediction of an early spring, Big Bear Lake is still a winter wonderland and the skiing is amazing! Book your Big Bear Getaway today and enjoy winter before it’s gone!

Saint Valentine’s Day, commonly known as Valentine’s Day, or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it remains a working day in most of them. It is the second most celebrated holiday around the world second to New Year’s Day.

St. Valentine’s Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote “from your Valentine” as a farewell to her. Today, Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valentine’s Day, albeit on July 6th and July 30th, the former date in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna (modern Terni).

The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

The rise of Internet popularity at the turn of the millennium is creating new traditions. Millions of people use, every year, digital means of creating and sending Valentine’s Day greeting messages such as e-cards, love coupons or printable greeting cards. An estimated 15 million e-valentines were sent in 2010.
