Well, we are in the final month of Big Bear Lake’s ‘official’ Summer Season and what a season it has been! We have enjoyed concerts, art shows, fishing tournaments, Old Miner’s Days, cowboy gatherings, theater productions, bike races, a marathon, a triathlon, craft fairs, garden & home tours, fireworks and so much more! And those are only the special events! Big Bear has stuff you love to do, stuff you’ve always wanted to do and stuff you never even thought of that you can (and should!) do.

4th Annual Tour de Big Bear

Held in the high country of Southern California’s San Bernardino Mountains, riders of all levels escape the summer heat and cruise alpine roadways, over high mountain passes like Onyx Summit (elevation of 8,443 feet), and around Big Bear and Baldwin Lakes. Each Tour distance includes portions of the 2010, 2012 and proposed 2014 AMGEN Tour of California. Stages Phil Liggett named “one of the best cycling stages we’ve seen in America, ever!”
Tour de Big Bear Route Details Tour de Big Bear – 25 mile route – over 700 feet of climbing. Big Bear Valley Tour – 50 mile route -more than 1,800 feet of climbing. The Grand Tour – 70 mile route – over 3,700 feet of climbing. THE CLIMB- 100 mile route – 7,425 feet of challenging climbing. Rider Privileges and Weekend Events An organized start and finish staging area at “The Village” and a bike valet during Saturday’s festivities. The event will be timed overall and include a NEW King of the Mountain Race Segment and CASH prizes for participants of the 70 and 100 mile routes. All pre-registered riders will receive a goodie bag, custom-made finishers’ medal, and our now famous high performance technical shirt. Distances will be staffed with Course Marshalls, legendary nutrition/hydration stations, host numerous first aid and repair vehicles.
Tour de Big Bear weekend events include Friday packet pick-up, no-host pasta dinner, optional spectacular sunset dinner cruise on Big Bear Lake, and a Goldsprints Competition at Nottingham’s Tavern. Saturday’s post ride activities include: Cycling Expo. Blues for the Zoo concert – riders receive discounts on tickets to attend this annual lakeside event, Saturday evening Goldsprints Competition, pitting qualifies from earlier rounds against each other for final overall winners. Rounding out the weekend is a time trial race and an organized recovery ride, both scheduled for Sunday. The Ride the Future E-Vehicle Tour Visits Big Bear Lake

The Ride the Future Tour is a 45 city trek across the United States featuring a caravan of electric vehicles, making the entire trip from Charleston, South Carolina to the Google Headquarters in Silicon Valley without using a drop of gasoline. Locals and visitors will have the chance to view the vehicles along with their Traveling Expo at the Bartlett Events Area from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm. There will be e-bicycles available for demo rides and other activities at Expo.

Antique Car Club Fun Run

The Antique Car Club’s Fun Run takes place Friday August 9th through Sunday August 11th. The Fun Run features a car show with 500+ cars – roadsters, classics, antiques and hot rods, lining the streets of Big Bear Village. Friday is registration day from 9-5 pm for participants at the Bartlett Parking Lot, Saturday is the day to view the cars on display from 9-4 pm and the Fun Run drive around the Lake takes place at 4pm at the end of day on Saturday, and the awards ceremonies are on Sunday starting at 9:00 am.

“Robin Hood…the Panto” at the Big Bear Discovery Center Amphitheater

The Big Bear Theatre Project presents “Robin Hood…the Panto” a hilarious, family-friendly, light-hearted romp through the classic tale that tells the story of Robin Hood, with a twist. Robin and his Merry Men steal from the rich and give to the poor. They’ll battle against the Sheriff of Nottingham and the evil Prince John while waiting for the good King Richard to return. Performances run three consecutive weekend dates at the Big Bear Discovery Center Amphitheater with opening night on July 26, 2013. Additional performances are July 27, August 2, 3, 9, with closing night on August 10, 2013. YOUNG EAGLES – FREE Airplane Rides for Kids at Big Bear City Airport

The Young Eagles program is held at the Airport August 10th and September 14th month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m The Young Eagles program was started by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) in an effort to stimulate interest in aviation for young people. Children between the ages of 8 and 17 are offered a free airplane ride around the Big Bear area by pilots from the Pilot’s Association. Each child will be given a preflight review of the basics of flight and the main parts of an airplane prior to the flight. No appointments are necessary, but each child must be accompanied by a parent or adult who must sign a release of liability for the child and can then take pictures of the happy flyer after their flight. Due to inclement weather at times in Big Bear, Young Eagles flights may be cancelled at short notice.

Flashlight Safari at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo Experience the Big Bear Alpine Zoo’s nocturnal animals. As soon as the sun sets and the stars begin to shine the nocturnal animals activate, and their natural instincts take over.Gates open 6:15 PM and close at 6:30 PM to start the tour. Bring your flashlight and wear warm clothes.

2nd Annual Big Bear Ridge Trail Run at Bear Mountain Ski Resort

2nd ANNUAL BIG BEAR RIDGE TRAIL RUN features a 24 and 13 miles courses as well as a shorter 10K course and is the final race of the Race Ready Trail Series 2013.
The 24 miler is one big loop in the San Bernardino National Forest, consisting of fires roads and single track. The race starts at 7,000-feet elevation and runners will reach the highest elevation behind Snow Summit Ski Resort at 8,000-feet elevation.
The 13 miler is also one big loop in the San Bernardino National Forest, consisting of a mix fires roads and single track. It also starts at 7,000 feet elevation with runners reaching the highest elevation behind Snow Summit Ski Resort at 8,000-feet elevation.
The 10K will have a section of out and back. This race also starts at 7,000-feet elevation and will reach its highest point at 8,000-feet. Runners will enjoy the same spectacular views as the longer runs.
Registration is on Saturday October 5th from 3-5 pm and Sunday October 6th at 7:00 am at La Montana Mexican Restaurant 42164 Moonridge Road.
Race Start is at 9:00 am at Bear Mountain Ski Resort 43101 Goldmine Drive.
Awards ceremonies and taco feed at La Montana’s in the early afternoon.
