Kids today are surrounded by technology. From their phones and tablets to their video games and laptops, we live in a very electronic society. Technology is amazing and I personally love the time we live in and look forward to what new gadgets are still to come, but I also love to be in the forest and hear the wind blow through the trees, see the birds and squirrels frolicking, smell the pine from the trees and feel the crunch of bare ground beneath my feet.

SBNF signOne of the most amazing things about Big Bear is our National Forest. The variety of plant life and animals that make the forest their home will surprise and fascinate you. The forest is a wondrous place, especially to the young and young at heart, and it is so important for us to explore the world we live in. Sometimes we need to put down the gadgets and experience the wonders of the natural world.

A great way to learn more about the San Bernardino National Forest and the Big Bear area in particular is to head over to the north shore of the lake and visit the Big Bear Discovery Center. They have programs for young and old alike which include interpretive trails and hikes, kayak and canoe tours, a Children’s Forest and the Nature Discovery Zone.

From the Discovery Center website:

The Nature Discovery Zone is an outdoor adventure space designed to enhance nature play and exploration while reconnecting children to nature.

The Zone is designed to inspire creativity, connectivity and stewardship to the natural environment for children 2 to 7 years childrens-forest.180.135.cof age.  This new addition to the Big Bear Discovery Center features nine interactive areas to encourage outdoor exploration and unstructured play.  Areas include: gathering area, nature art, messy materials, building, climbing and crawling, music and movement, pathways through planting, dirt digging, quiet area, and a large open area for unstructured play.
