Music in the Mountains #1 with Taylor Dayne and Sophie B. Hawkins at the Discovery Center

Jun 25, 2016 | 05:00PM – 10:00PM

Music in the Mountains #1 with Taylor Dayne and Sophie B. Hawkins at the Discovery Center will take place on Saturday June 25th.

About Taylor Dayne: From platinum pop songs to chart-topping dance hits, Taylor Dayne is one of the most popular vocalists of the modern age. She has enjoyed Top 10 hits in three consequent decades, selling a combined 75 million singles and albums along the way. Originally signed by music mogul Clive Davis in the 1980s, Dayne has become a true crossover artist, someone whose popularity spans multiple generations and many different music formats. With the release of her first two albums, 1988’s Tell It to My Heart and 1989’s Can’t Fight Fate, Dayne racked up three number 1 singles: “Tell It to My Heart,” “Love Will Lead You Back” and “Prove Your Love to Me.” Her Grammy-nominated songs could be heard across the radio dial, from Top 40 pop stations to adult contemporary channels. http://www.taylordayne.com/

Opening the show will be Sophie B. Hawkins, a  proudly idiosyncratic singer and songwriter who embraces an eclectic range of musical influences and isn’t afraid to be nakedly confessional in her music. Here latest CD “The Crossing” was released in 2012. www.sophiebhawkins.com

Elton John’s “Greatest Hits Live” Featuring Brody Dolyniuk at The Cave

Jul 08, 2016 | 06:30PM – 11:30PM

Brody Dolyniuk is a multi-faceted, self-taught musician who began his professional music career playing in piano bars. A chance meeting with a pair of star-shaped sunglasses led to forming an Elton John tribute band Brody called Yellow Brick Road. Soon YBR began going outside the EJ catalog to perform other classic rock giants such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and more.Within a year, YBR was a steady working band in the Las Vegas music scene and had cultivated a large local following. YBR also became an in-demand choice for the corporate entertainment market.

After 14 years of solid work, Brody stepped down as front man for YBR to pursue other avenues, namely his role as a vocalist for Windborne Music’s touring symphony shows, singing the Music of Queen, and later The Who, Rolling Stones, U2 and Journey. Simultaneously Brody had been developing his own production called Symphonic Rockshow.

Big Bear Airport Young Eagles Program KIDS FLY FREE!

Jul 09, 2016 | 09:00AM – 12:00PM

Big Bear Airport Young Eagles Program KIDS FLY FREE!

The Young Eagles program is held at the Airport and flys on the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to noon, May through September. This is a wonderful experience for young flyers. The Young Eagles program was started by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) in an effort to stimulate interest in aviation for young people.

Children between the ages of 8 and 17 are offered a free airplane ride around the Big Bear area by pilots from the Pilot’s Association. Pilots must be a member of the Pilot’s Association and the EAA in order to participate in this program. We have run this program for five years and have flown thousands of children. Each child will be given a preflight review of the basics of flight and the main parts of an airplane prior to the flight.

No appointments are necessary, but each child must be accompanied by a parent or adult who must sign a release of liability for the child and can then take pictures of the happy flyer after their flight.

Due to inclement weather at times in Big Bear, Young Eagles flights may be cancelled at short notice.

For further information on this program call Roger Schmidt at (909)547-0832. For additional background information and activity suggestions log on to the Young Eagles web site at www.youngeagles.org.

Location: Big Bear Airport at 501 Valley Blvd, Big Bear City

The 14th Annual Xeriscape Garden Tour

Jul 16, 2016 | 09:00AM – 04:00PM

The 14th annual Xeriscape Garden Tour sponsored by the Sierra Club Big Bear group is set to take place on Saturday, July 16th. Participants can begin the FREE self-guided tour anytime between 9 am and noon starting at Eminger’s Mountain Nursery, located at 41223 Big Bear Blvd. in Big Bear Lake, across the street from the Denny’s Restaurant.  Once registered, participants will have until 4:00 pm to complete the driving tour of the homes in Big Bear Valley. A tour booklet, which includes the locations of the 8 stops, a map and helpful information on gardening in the mountains, will be handed out at the starting location.

The Xeriscape Garden tour, put on by the Sierra Club Big Bear Group, is the perfect opportunity to get landscaping ideas, discover drought tolerant plants and learn how to save money on your water bill, all while creating a beautiful garden. This year’s theme focuses on education and identifying drought-tolerant and native plants with “What’s that Plant.” Volunteers at each of the featured gardens will have a plant list specific to that particular home, identifying the top ten plants to help you find the plants you would like for your garden. Plant names and a brief description will help attendees make their own plant lists with the confidence of knowing they are planting beautiful drought-tolerant plants. The plant lists will also be highlighted on the Xeriscape Website at http://bigbeargardentour.weebly.com.

The X-Tour Photo Contest will also be back this year with three categories: Plant/Flower Close-ups, People & Gardens, and Overall Garden. The top winner in each category will receive a $20 nursery gift card. More details on how to enter will be included in the tour booklet.

The tour will once again highlight the DWP’s Xeriscape Demonstration Garden on Fox Farm Road, in front of the Community Garden, with native plant expert Orchid Black on hand to answer questions. In addition to the Demonstration Garden, there will be 6 homeowner gardens, landscaped by professionals and homeowners. So no matter your budget, you’ll find solutions for creating low-maintenance, drought tolerant gardens here in Big Bear.

For additional information on the Sierra Club’s Xeriscape Garden Tour contact Lisa Patterson at 909-866-1067. To see pictures of previous tours, go online to: http://bigbeargardentour.weebly.com.

Music in the Mountains #3 with John Waite at the Big Bear Discovery Center

Jul 23, 2016 | 05:00PM – 10:00PM

Music in the Mountains #3 with John Waite at the Discovery Center will take place on Saturday July 23rd.

About John Waite:The ride began when Waite was tapped as bassist and lead vocalist for the Babys who rocketed to Top 20 chart positions with a pair of infectious hits, “Isn’t it Time” from the band’s sophomore LP, Broken Heart in 1977 and the monster ballad, “Every Time I Think of You” off 1978’s Head First.  From the ashes of the Baby’s, however, rose an abundant and prodigious solo career, Waite’s new greatest hits album is a thrilling snapshot representing the inspired artistic breadth of this legendary artist’s entire career tallying more than 40 years on the rock and roll highway. From re-recorded versions of signature classics, “Back on My Feet Again,” “Isn’t It Time” and “Missing You,” hard-hitting live renditions of “Head First,” “Saturday Night” and “Change” to the more introspective fare of “Suicide Life,” “Downtown” and “Bluebird Cafe”.   John Waite is a no-holds-barred rock n’ roll performer who devotes heart and soul to a live performance making sure every fan in the audience leaves the concert hall just as elated and exhausted as the band they paid to see.  He walks and rocks among us. http://www.johnwaiteworldwide.com/about-john-waite/

Wynona Judd and the Big Noise at the Cave

Jun 18, 2016 | 06:30PM – 11:00PM

A certain musical and spiritual condition defines Wynonna Judd’s first album with her band The Big Noise — not to mention the first album of original material in 13 years from one of country music’s supreme redheads. That quality is joy. It dominates, not just because Judd is performing with a small group led by her husband, the drummer and producer Cactus Moser, letting loose on songs she hand-selected because she liked them rather than out of concern for padding her remarkable roster of hits. Wynonna & The Big Noise lays bare the joy that is Judd’s most potent gift as a vocalist.

The Cave is a new, intimate music venue in Big Bear that promises to bring you up close and personal with its performers. Doors open at 6:30 pm and concert starts at 7:30 pm, Please call or visit website for ticket information.

This is a post from a couple of years ago, but every year at this time when Big Bear Lake opens for boating and the fishing tournaments get under way, I think of my grandparents and all of the memories I have of spending time with them on the lake. So in case you missed it, here it is again.

Miss you Grandma and Grandpa…

When I was a kid, my grandparents loved to take myself and my siblings fishing on Big Bear Lake. They had a pretty nice boat that they had named ‘The Jennifer Lynn’ after my oldest sister. Sometimes they would take all of us kids, sometimes we would go with them individually – but a good time was always in store.

Now my Grandpa was a kind and sweet man, but he was also pretty stubborn about things. We always had to use proper words around him – no slang was allowed. He was a bit fussy and liked things just so. I guess he was a bit of a perfectionist (hmm…I guess I got that from him :) ) so I was always a bit on guard around him.

Grandma on the other hand, ACTED that way around him, but she liked to be silly and ‘naughty’ on the sly. My mom told me stories about how when she was a kid, every once in awhile her mom would let her hide in the closet until Grandpa went to work and then let her play hooky from school and they would go do something fun.

As most men are, my Grandpa was pretty competitive and really didn’t like to lose. Unfortunately for him, my Grandma was a very lucky fisher-woman. Very lucky. He would use all of these fancy lures and specialty baits and catch maybe one little blue gill. Grandma would slap some Velveeta cheese on a hook and catch so many trout she would have to throw them back. Grandpa would get so mad! He just couldn’t figure it out. And when he wasn’t looking, she would look over at me and just giggle and giggle. Those were fun times and wonderful memories.

Big Bear Lake is open for the season and the fishing is great! This coming weekend is the Annual “Fishin’ for 50k” Trout Derby. This year, there are more chances than ever to win cash prizes!! Look for more information in tomorrow’s ‘Tuesday’s Topic’ post.

Come on up to Big Bear Lake and make your own special memories. We have many homes available for this coming weekend, including several LAKEFRONT CABINS WITH DOCKS!! Visit RS Vacations.net  and book your Big Bear Getaway today!!
