Exercise should be fun! Well, that’s what ‘they’ say, right? I’d really like to know who ‘they’ are and how they know so much about everything anyway. But I digress…..
Getting enough exercise has always been an issue for me. I never played sports in school nor did I play recreational team sports as a kid. I sit in a chair at work and have hobbies that strain my brain more than my body. I try to get on the treadmill or stationary bike, but it is so boring! I do enjoy skiing every now and then and I finally took up mountain biking 5 years ago (not so fun riding up, really fun riding down!), but I really wanted to find a lake sport that the hubby and I could enjoy and get a workout to boot. We found it: Kayaking!
We first tried kayaking four years ago on Big Bear Lake and we both absolutely loved it! The view of the mountains? Spectacular! Nice cool water gently splashing you (or soaking you if you fall in like I did!), and a wonderful sense of peace and calm. Outdoor sports and activities really are a great way to get a workout because it is really more about the fun – the exercise is just a perk. I know that when I get back from a few hours on the slopes or a bike ride in the forest, I don’t feel like I just had a ‘workout’. I feel like I had an adventure that just happened to be good for me. 🙂 The same holds true after getting back from paddling.
One of the great things about Big Bear is that there are so many different ‘active’ things to do – all four seasons of the year. Just take your pick as to what you and your family enjoy and go do it. The bonuses of doing things in the mountains are the beautiful blue skies, sparkling blue lake, majestic pine forests and four-season weather. And of course the great workout! If you’ve never experienced Big Bear, we invite you to come up and experience this one-of-a-kind locale for yourself.
This coming weekend hosts the 10th Annual Paddle Big Bear Event. I will have more information on this event throughout the week. If you’ve never paddled before, I highly recommend that you give it a try!
