As we have been enjoying spectacular, spring weather the last several weeks, I got to thinking how very much I love this time of year in Big Bear. It brought to mind a post of mine from several years ago at this time and I decided to share it once again. Yes, Big Bear is a beautiful wintertime destination and is what we are known for, but it is not only a wintertime destination. Enjoy!

As winter in Big Bear Lake has come to a close, I can’t help but look forward to spring and summertime in the mountains. I love the warming days and cool nights, the flowers and trees blooming, the blue skies….truly beautiful.

Big Bear Spring

One of the most surprising things to me is that most people believe that Big Bear is strictly a winter destination – no more than a ski town. I can’t even count how many guests ask me what we do up here the rest of the year. Or, when I suggested that they visit us in spring or summer, they asked “but what is there to do?”

golf in the mountains_0

I guess I take it all for granted because I moved to Big Bear as a small child in 1977 with my family, but truly winter is my least favorite season in Big Bear. Don’t get me wrong, the snow is beautiful and I do enjoy skiing, but there is just so much more to do in the other months. Lake activities such as kayaking, fishing, boating and more, golfing, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, the zoo, go-karts, ropes courses, climbing walls, ziplines, the alpine slide, and waterslide. The list goes on and on!! Not to mention the shopping and restaurants in The Village, art shows, wine walks, car shows, music events, theater offerings, and holiday events – including the annual Independence Day fireworks show.

While ‘June gloom’ gets you down, we are enjoying sparkling blue skies! When you are sweating it out in July, we are putting on a light sweater for our evening walks. Seriously people, it is GORGEOUS up here in the spring, summer, and fall!! And guess what? It is less expensive to enjoy Big Bear in the “off” seasons as well. Do yourself a favor and come up to explore Big Bear Lake in the warmer months. You will be amazed at our perfect weather and how much there is to do up here.

El Dorado Fire Update #8
September 22, 2020 – 5:30 pm
BIG BEAR ADVISORY LIFTED
As a result of firefighters gaining additional containment on the El Dorado Fire over the past several days, Fire incident commanders have ordered the fire advisory for the Big Bear area to be lifted effective immediately. There are currently no restrictions on travel to and from the Big Bear Valley.
THREAT FROM EL DORADO FIRE GREATLY REDUCED, CITY TO DISCONTINUE UPDATES
Thankfully, the threat to Big Bear from the El Dorado Fire has been greatly reduced due to the dedicated work of Fire personnel over the past two weeks. The City greatly appreciates their hard work!
Unless the fire becomes more concerning to Big Bear, this will be the final update from the City of Big Bear Lake regarding the El Dorado Fire.
The City will initiate additional public communications as necessary for any future threats from the El Dorado Fire or any new emergencies impacting Big Bear Lake.

El Dorado FireUpdate #5
September 17, 2020 – 5 pm
BIG BEAR ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT THIS WEEKEND, VISITORS STILL ENCOURAGED TO POSTPONE TRIPS UNTIL AFTER THE FIRE THREAT HAS PASSED.
The City of Big Bear Lake and the entire Big Bear Valley remain under a fire advisory for this weekend due to the El Dorado Fire, and visitors are still encouraged to postpone trips until after the fire threat has passed.
Although not an imminent threat to Big Bear Lake at this time, the El Dorado Fire is still a significant concern for our community. It is important for our community to be as prepared as possible IF an evacuation warning or order becomes necessary, and we are still seeking to minimize the population in the Big Bear Valley to enable a faster, more efficient evacuation IF ultimately necessary.
EL DORADO FIRE CONTINUES TO BURN JUST SOUTH OF SR 38, FIRE PERSONNEL ARE SUCCESSFULLY HOLDING THE FIRE THUS FAR.
The El Dorado Fire has continued to burn in the same general area for the past few days, and the northern edge remains just south of SR 38, approximately 5 1/2 miles due south of Big Bear Lake. Fire personnel continue to work hard to contain the fire, and efforts are focused on preventing the fire from crossing SR 38. Thus far, their efforts have been successful, and the City greatly appreciates their diligent efforts.
The El Dorado Fire (thankfully) does not pose an imminent threat to Big Bear Lake at this time, but it remains a significant concern and we continue to closely monitor the threat to our community. City officials remain in close contact with Fire officials, and will adjust our guidance for our community if / when necessary due to changing conditions.
Much of the terrain between the El Dorado Fire and the City of Big Bear Lake is steep and rugged, and SR 38 and the Santa Ana River are key trigger points for future Fire management decisions. IF the El Dorado Fire crosses SR 38, it is possible that an evacuation warning will be issued. IF the fire crosses the Santa Ana River, it is possible that an evacuation order will be issued.
The City encourages everyone to remain vigilant, continue to monitor the fire status, and plan accordingly if the fire threat escalates.

BIG BEAR LAKE IS STILL NOT UNDER ANY EVACUATION WARNINGS OR ORDERS AT THIS TIME.
The City of Big Bear Lake and the entire Big Bear Valley remain under a fire advisory due to the El Dorado Fire, and this advisory is intended to raise community awareness about the potential threat to our community from the El Dorado Fire.
Neither the City of Big Bear Lake nor any other communities in the Big Bear Valley are under an evacuation warning or an evacuation order at this time. Residents should continue to monitor the City’s email updates (subscribe by clicking here), the City’s website, the City’s Facebook page (City of Big Bear Lake – City Government), on Twitter (@CityofBBL), or on Instagram (citybigbearlake) for the most current information pertaining to the City of Big Bear Lake.
The next step, IF it is eventually warranted, is the issuance of a formal evacuation warning, which will direct our residents to prepare for a potential evacuation order. The purpose of the evacuation warning is to provide ample time for residents to gather important documents, medications, clothing, and pet supplies, and make other arrangements IF an evacuation order ultimately becomes necessary. IF an evacuation order is issued, residents will be advised to leave Big Bear immediately due to an imminent fire threat.
All residents are advised to closely monitor the El Dorado Fire, and take appropriate precautions based on your individual circumstances. Everyone is always under a voluntary evacuation order at all times, and if you have special needs or concerns, please make appropriate preparations based on your specific circumstances.
Be safe!
