KayakGroupWith the Big Bear Paddlefest coming up this weekend, I thought that this post from 2013 would be fun to share. This is a really fun sport and a great way to get some exercise. I highly recommend it!!

Kayaking is the use of a Kayak for moving across water. Kayaking and canoeing are also known as paddling. Kayaking is distinguished from canoeing by the sitting position of the paddler and the number of blades on the paddle. A kayak is defined by the International Canoe Federation (the world sanctioning body) as a boat where the paddler faces forward, legs in front, using a double-bladed paddle. Most kayaks have closed decks, although “sit-on-top” kayaks are growing in popularity, as are inflatable kayaks which come without decks but which have air chambers surrounding the boat.

Whitewater kayaking involves taking a kayak down rapids, weirs and waterfalls. Sea kayaking, also referred to as ocean kayaking or touring, involves taking kayaks out on to the ocean or other open water such as a lake. It can involve short paddles with a return to the starting point (or “put-in”), or expeditions covering many miles and days. Kayaking of all kinds has become more popular through the 1990s and early 21st century.

Kayaks are classified by their use. There are eight primary classifications: polo, slalom, whitewater, surf, touring/expedition, light touring/day tripping, sprint/racing and general recreation. From these primary classifications stem many sub-classes. For example, a fishing kayak is simply a general-recreation kayak outfitted with accessories that make it easier from which to fish. A creek kayak is a certain type of whitewater kayak, designed to handle narrow gully type rivers and falls. Also within these classifications are many levels of performance which further separate the individual models. In other words, not all touring kayaks handle the same.

Kayaks and canoes are also classified by their design and the materials from which they are made. Kayaks can have hard or soft chines which require different types of handling. Each design has its specific advantage, including performance, maneuverability, stability, and paddling style. Kayaks can be made of metal, fiberglass, wood, plastic, fabrics, and inflatable fabrics such as PVC or rubber. Each material also has its specific advantage, including strength, durability, portability, flexibility, resistance to UV, and storage requirements. For example, Wooden kayaks can be created from kits or built by hand, but they are heavy to transport. Inflatable kayaks, made from lightweight fabric, can be dried, deflated, and stored in a closet.

There are several major configurations of kayaks. “Sit on tops”, as the name suggests, involve sitting on top of the kayak in an open area. “Cockpit style” involves sitting with the legs and hips inside the kayak hull with a “spray deck” or “spray skirt” that creates a water resistant seal around the waist. “Inflatables” are a hybrid of the two previous configurations, these boats have an open deck, but the paddler sits below the level of the deck. “Tandems” are configured for multiple paddlers, in contrast to the single person designs featured by most kayaks. Tandems can be used by two or even three paddlers. How a kayak is configured has nothing to do with its classification. All configurations are represented in each of the five primary classifications.

Because of their range and adaptability, kayaks can be useful for other outdoor activities such as diving, fishing, wilderness exploration and search and rescue during floods.

Dick Dale at the Cave

Jul 01, 2017 | 06:30PM – 11:30PM

Dick Dale invented surf music in the 1950’s. Not the ’60’s as is commonly believed. He was given the title “King of the Surf Guitar” by his fellow surfers with whom he surfed with from sun-up to sun-down. He met Leo Fender the guitar and amplifier Guru and Leo asked Dale to play his newly creation, the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar. The minute Dale picked up the guitar, Leo Fender broke into uncontrolled laughter and disbelief, he was watching Dale play a right handed guitar upside down and backwards, Dale was playing a right handed guitar left handed and changing the chords in his head then transposing the chords to his hands to create a sound never heard before.

The 15th Annual Xeriscape Garden Tour

Jul 15, 2017 | 09:00AM – 04:00PM

The 2016/2017 winter season has seen above average snow and rainfall, compared to years in the recent past. Does this mean the drought is over? Maybe for some parts of California, but not for Big Bear Valley.

The 15th Annual Big Bear Valley Xeriscape Garden Tour, put on by the Sierra Club Big Bear Group, is the perfect opportunity to get landscaping ideas, discover drought tolerant plants and learn how to save money on your water bill, all while creating a beautiful drought-tolerant garden. As an added bonus, one of the homes will feature a landscape that is both low-water use and fire-wise.

This year’s theme, “Water Conservation…A Big Bear Way of Life,” will focus on Big Bear’s unique water situation and how everyone can do their part to conserve water while still creating beautiful and exciting yards and gardens.

The tour will once again include the DWP’s Xeriscape Demonstration Garden on Fox Farm Road, in front of the Community Garden, with native plant expert Orchid Black on hand to answer questions. In addition, there will be a variety of homeowner gardens, some landscaped by professionals and others by the homeowners. No matter your budget, you’ll find solutions for creating low-maintenance, drought tolerant gardens right here in Big Bear Valley.

So mark your calendars for the 15th annual Xeriscape Garden Tour to take place on Saturday, July 15th. Participants can begin the FREE self-guided tour anytime between 9 am and noon starting at Eminger’s Mountain Nursery, located at 41223 Big Bear Blvd. in Big Bear Lake, across the street from the Denny’s Restaurant.  A tour booklet, which includes the locations and directions for the tour stops, and helpful information on Xeriscape gardening in the mountains, will be handed out at the starting location. Once registered, participants will have until 4:00 pm to complete the self-guided driving tour of the homes in Big Bear Valley.

Presented by Team Big Bear, and through the strong partnership between the Southern California Mountains Foundation and the Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation, the Mountaintop Trail Rally aims to unite the widest range of trail users in a single place through a competitive mountain bike race, non-competitive mountain bike ride, trail run, and hike. In other words, any way you enjoy the trails up here using muscle power you will love participating in this event!

Exercise should be fun! Well, that’s what ‘they’ say, right? I’d really like to know who ‘they’ are and how they know so much about everything anyway. But I digress…..

Getting enough exercise has always been an issue for me. I never played sports in school nor did I play recreational team sports as a kid. I sit in a chair at work and have hobbies that strain my brain more than my body. I try to get on the treadmill or stationary bike, but it is so boring! I do enjoy skiing every now and then and I finally took up mountain biking 5 years ago (not so fun riding up, really fun riding down!), but I really wanted to find a lake sport that the hubby and I could enjoy and get a workout to boot. We found it: Kayaking!

Kayak groupWe first tried kayaking four years ago on Big Bear Lake and we both absolutely loved it!  The view of the mountains? Spectacular! Nice cool water gently splashing you (or soaking you if you fall in like I did!), and a wonderful sense of peace and calm. Outdoor sports and activities really are a great way to get a workout because it is really more about the fun – the exercise is just a perk. I know that when I get back from a few hours on the slopes or a bike ride in the forest, I don’t feel like I just had a ‘workout’. I feel like I had an adventure that just happened to be good for me.  🙂 The same holds true after getting back from paddling.

One of the great things about Big Bear is that there are so many different ‘active’ things to do – all four seasons of the year. Just take your pick as to what you and your family enjoy and go do it. The bonuses of doing things in the mountains are the beautiful blue skies, sparkling blue lake, majestic pine forests and four-season weather. And of course the great workout!  If you’ve never experienced Big Bear, we invite you to come up and experience this one-of-a-kind locale for yourself.

This coming weekend hosts the 10th Annual Paddle Big Bear Event. I will have more information on this event throughout the week. If you’ve never paddled before, I highly recommend that you give it a try!
