Run, walk, or dance into the chilly waters of Big Bear Lake on Saturday, April 2 to raise funds for Special Olympics Inland Empire. For just a minimum of $50, you can participate in the coolest event of 2022 – the Polar Plunge. Not only will you brave the cold waters, but you’ll have the opportunity to earn incentives, party with friends, and be freezin’ for a reason: to help support Special Olympics.
Ways To Participate
The Polar Plunge is a wacky, fun event and a unique way to support persons with intellectual disabilities.
Join a team or Plunge by yourself, either way you’ll join hundreds of people that are freezin’ for a reason!
Register as a Plunger and create a fundraising page where you can collect donations online.
Too chicken to plunge? You can still support the cause through donations while you keep your feet on dry land. Cheer on the plungers as you stay warm in the ‘chicken coop’.
Start or Join a Team – Create a team or join an existing team’s fundraising page.
Support a Plunger – Want to support a friend? Make a donation.
The more you raise, the more you can earn.
What To Expect
The Polar Plunge takes place Veteran’s Park, but there’s more than just swimming to look forward to. A Family Fun Area will include law enforcement and fire department displays, a rock wall (weather dependent), a silent auction, raffle and more.
Costumes are not mandatory but encouraged! Brave the waters as Superman, rock out like a superstar, or dive in with a swimsuit.
Schedule
Friday registration from 5-8 PM at Big Bear Chamber of Commerce at 630 Bartlett Rd.
Registration opens at Veteran’s Park (40870 Big Bear Blvd) at 10 AM on April 2.
Opening Ceremonies begins at 11:45 AM
The Plunge begins at Noon!
Family Fun
A Family Fun area will include many activities, including law enforcement and fire department displays, a rock wall (dependent on weather), a silent auction and raffle, and much more.
How Your Donation Helps
Every dollar raised through the Polar Plunge will help fund Special Olympics Inland Empire programs in
your community. Special Olympics is more than a sports organization, our athletes are twice as healthy as non-participating people with intellectual disabilities. We also offer free health screenings, nutrition and wellness programs, and leadership opportunities for our athletes. Special Olympics Health is made possible by a generous gift from Tom Golisano and Golisano Foundation.
Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.
The Special Olympics Athlete’s Oath
All Special Olympics programs are free to the athletes and their families. When people with and without intellectual disabilities connect on the sports field, hearts and minds are opened and barriers are broken down.

As we have been enjoying spectacular, spring weather the last several weeks, I got to thinking how very much I love this time of year in Big Bear. It brought to mind a post of mine from several years ago at this time and I decided to share it once again. Yes, Big Bear is a beautiful wintertime destination and is what we are known for, but it is not only a wintertime destination. Enjoy!
As winter in Big Bear Lake has come to a close, I can’t help but look forward to spring and summertime in the mountains. I love the warming days and cool nights, the flowers and trees blooming, the blue skies….truly beautiful.
One of the most surprising things to me is that most people believe that Big Bear is strictly a winter destination – no more than a ski town. I can’t even count how many guests ask me what we do up here the rest of the year. Or, when I suggested that they visit us in spring or summer, they asked “but what is there to do?”
I guess I take it all for granted because I moved to Big Bear as a small child in 1977 with my family, but truly winter is my least favorite season in Big Bear. Don’t get me wrong, the snow is beautiful and I do enjoy skiing, but there is just so much more to do in the other months. Lake activities such as kayaking, fishing, boating and more, golfing, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, the zoo, go-karts, ropes courses, climbing walls, ziplines, the alpine slide, and waterslide. The list goes on and on!! Not to mention the shopping and restaurants in The Village, art shows, wine walks, car shows, music events, theater offerings, and holiday events – including the annual Independence Day fireworks show.
While ‘June gloom’ gets you down, we are enjoying sparkling blue skies! When you are sweating it out in July, we are putting on a light sweater for our evening walks. Seriously people, it is GORGEOUS up here in the spring, summer, and fall!! And guess what? It is less expensive to enjoy Big Bear in the “off” seasons as well. Do yourself a favor and come up to explore Big Bear Lake in the warmer months. You will be amazed at our perfect weather and how much there is to do up here.

23rd Annual Holcomb Valley Trail Run
Jun 15, 2019 | 07:00AM – 03:00PM
Starting at the water’s edge of Big Bear Lake, the Holcomb Valley Trail Run brings runners deep into the heart of the most scenic area in Big Bear, Holcomb Valley. Breathtaking views of the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area, Big Bear Lake, and the surrounding valley can be seen from the miles of single track running along the Pacific Crest Trail. The Holcomb Valley Trail Run offers three separate distances: a 33-mile race, a 15-mile race, and a 7-mile race. Sections of the Pacific Crest Trail are part of each race course. This is some of the best trail running in Southern California; so sign up early, the race has sold out the past 5 years.
Now in it’s 23rd year, the Holcomb Valley Trail Run was established by Gary & Pam Kalina in 1997. Gary was an avid runner; he realized that some of the best trail running in Southern California was right here in Big Bear. Their involvement is crucial to the success of the event. Gary and Pam had decided after 15 years of event directing and coordination it was time to close that chapter in their life. Team Big Bear now runs the event in their honor.
